Die Original-Beschreibung:
The 15 articles in Section 1 address the changing role of zoos,
concentrating on the fundamental responsibilities and problems facing modern
zoological institutions. In order to fulfil their obligations to society
zoos must become more proactive as conservation organizations. Loss of habitats
and wildlife, the increase in animalrights and welfare organizations, and
the continued increase and urbanization of the Earths human population,
all have to be considered when examining the function of zoos. The roles
of the International Zoo Yearbook (1960), the International Species Information
System (1973), the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (1979) and the
Re-introduction Specialist Group (1988) are discussed in four review articles.
Section 1 closes with an overview of the characteristics of a world-class
zoo, mainly from an American perspective, that includes many factors that
should be taken into consideration by the new generation of zoo and aquarium
directors, governing boards and staff everywhere.
Section 2 of Volume 38 comprises ten articles on subjects as diverse as
husbandry, breeding and behaviour of the Indian python, a description of
the co-ordinated captive-breeding programme for the Mountain peacock pheasant,
birth of koalas following artificial insemination, husbandry and breeding
of the Eastern pygmy possum, hand-rearing a Two-toed sloth, parturition and
induction of natural lactation in a Bornean orang-utan, food consumption,
growth and food passage times in Pacific walrus, and food consumption and
suckling in Killer whales. A computerized avicultural and veterinary record
system and standard guidelines for developing captivemanagement manuals for
terrestrial vertebrates are also described in this section.
Section 3 of Volume 38 contains the list of Zoos and Aquariums of the World
(updated to July 2002), a list of national and regional associations and
an up-to-date list of international studbooks, with data for 1998, 1999 and
2000.
